ADMIRAL CHALLENGE (FOOD DRIVE)
Announcing the Fleet Admiral’s Challenge
09.25.11
One of the things that makes STARFLEET and our chapters great is our willingness and dedication to help others who are less fortunate then ourselves. It’s something that I think that many of us have made a part of ourselves and our personal philosophies because of what we’ve seen and learned in Star Trek.
In 1967, The City on the Edge of Forever aired, and Captain Kirk said this to Edith Keeler:
“Let me help.” A hundred years or so from now, I believe, a famous novelist will write a classic using that theme. He’ll recommend those three words even over “I love you.”
When I’m out talking to people about STARFLEET and about our members, the things that we do in our communities and for people who are less fortunate than ourselves, I call this the “Let Me Help” Mentality, something that I believe our chapters have in abundance.
So, in hoping that many of you share this same mentality, as well as the enjoyment of a little bit of friendly competetion, I’m taking this opportunity to announce the first (in what I hope will be many) Fleet Admiral’s Challenge.
In the spirit of the upcoming Thanksgiving season (yes, I did say Thanksgiving, we’re only 3 weeks away from it now here in Canada), and with Christmas not too far behind, I’d like to ask that all chapters start a food drive collecting non-perishable food items for donation to your local Food Bank.
So, what’s the challenge? As you collect and make your donations, keep a tally of how much food you’ve collected in pounds and send that periodically to our Annual Campaign Director, Aaron Clark, at campaign@sfi.org This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Aaron will keep track of all of the stats sent to him, and will announce the three chapters who donated the largest amount of food in pounds to their local Food Bank, and will send them an Award Certificate for their efforts.
Aaron will be accepting donation counts starting on October 1st, 2011 through to January 1st, 2012.
For meeting chapters, I’d like to suggest that each CO ask each of their members to bring some non-perishable food items to each of your next meetings, whether it be canned foods, packaged pastas, tins of baby pablum or formula, or whatever you can spare, then at the end of each meeting, weigh the collection, drop it off at your local food bank, then E-Mail Aaron with the weight of how much you donated.
For correspondence chapters, I’d like to suggest that each CO ask each of their members to look in their cupboards, or to pick up a few extra items as they’re doing their grocery shopping, weigh those items, drop those items off at their local food banks, then to send the weight of their donation to their CO, and for the CO to then add all that information up and send it to Aaron.
Please note, if you really can’t afford to make this kind of donation, then please don’t. Take care of yourselves and your families first. This is intended for those of us who have extra which we can share with our communities.
I’m hoping that we’ll have some good participation out there, and that we can make an impact on those around us who need help.
Good luck!
–
